A research team from the Dept. of Bio-medical engineering at Memphis State University, led by Dr. JohnRay, set out to evaluate the best sleeping surface that resulted in the least strain on the back muscles.

Three surfaces were compared: spring mattresses, foam mattresses and water beds. Years of research followed. Detailed study on a identified sample covering all age groups of respondents was conducted. Finally, the orthopaedic team came to a conclusive verdict that the spring mattress was the most correct sleeping surface. The least muscle strains were recorded on a spring mattress since its's firm surface supported the spine in a more restful position and provided firm support to the shoulder and hips. Thus, allowing the spine to maintain its natural S curve.
